Sailing with the Søren Larsen

Transit of the Panama Canal

Judy and Sally wash mud off the anchor and chain as it is winched back on board. We had been stood by since 7.00 a.m. for the pilot to take us through the canal.
Gatun locks ahead. A series of three locks each lifting the vessel 8.7 metres (28 1/2 feet) and finally releasing her into Gatun Lake.
Keeping Soren centred in the locks required a certain amount of effort. We did all our own line handling through the canal, and avoided having to be pulled through by the 'Mules' - little locomotives on the banks of the locks.
The last lift, completed. Looking back for a last view of the Atlantic Ocean, now 85 feet below.
Barry, Lucy and Daphne taking advantage of the height for a view as we enter the Galliard Cut.
In the Galliard Cut, and approaching the Pedro Miguel Locks.
In the Pedro Miguel Locks. The fist of three drops, this being 31 feet. Our companion through all the locks was the 'Crimson Galaxy'. She was in ahead of us through the Gatun Locks, but we got ahead of her through the Gatun lake.
The Lock gates open onto the Pacific Ocean at the second of the two drops (27 1/2 feet each) in the Miraflores Locks. We had entered the first of the Gatun Locks at 9.00 in the morning, and left Miraflores Locks at about 4.30 in the afternoon.
